The urban riding of Scarborough-Rouge River (approximately 65 square kilometers in area) is located in the north-east section of the City of Toronto (formerly Scarborough which amalgamated with five other cities to form the new City of Toronto on January 1, 1998).

Boundaries description:

Consisting of that part of the City of Toronto described as follows: commencing at the intersection of Midland Avenue with the northerly limit of said city; thence easterly and southerly along the northerly and easterly limits of said city to Finch Avenue East; thence westerly along said avenue and its production to Meadowvale Road; thence generally southerly along said road to Sheppard Avenue East; thence westerly along said avenue to Morningside Avenue; thence southerly along Morningside Avenue to Highway No. 401; thence westerly along said highway to Brimley Road; thence northerly along said road to Finch Avenue East; thence westerly along said avenue to Midland Avenue; thence northerly along Midland Avenue to the point of commencement.

Transportation

All major forms of transportation extensively service the riding. A major highway, the MacDonald Cartier Freeway (Highway 401) serves as the riding's southern boundary. Trucking is the dominant mode of freight transportation for the industries in the riding. Two national railways running through the riding provide railway freight services: Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail System and Canadian National Railways (CNR). The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) provides an extensive network of bus routes that complement the subway and Light Rapid Transit (LRT) systems and the Government of Ontario (GO) commuter rail network. Pearson International Airport is situated 30 kilometers to the west of the riding.

Population

The electoral district of Scarborough--Rouge River (Ontario) has a population of 115,437 with 76,741 registered voters and 173 polling divisions.

Education:

The riding offers a full range of levels and types of education. Elementary, secondary, post-secondary and special education systems are available within the riding. Local University and Community College campuses serve the riding.

The Toronto (formerly Scarborough) Board of Education operates 29 elementary, 4 secondary schools and 1 French elementary school. The Metropolitan Separate School Board operates 14 elementary schools, 3 high schools and 1 French elementary school. There are also several private business schools.

Sports and Recreation

Facilities for every sport imaginable can be found in the riding - 9 parks, 4 golf centers, sports fields, public tennis centers, indoor and outdoor skating rinks, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 5 community centers and 3 libraries. There are several movie theatres serving both the English-speaking and non-English speaking residents.

Shopping

The riding services its diverse ethnic communities through retail outlets in plazas and enclosed shopping malls (Woodside Square, Malvern Town Centre, Dragon and Chartwell Malls) speaking many languages and selling goods and foods unique to the ethnic groups that live in the riding and region.

Religious Worship

The riding is home to churches for Roman Catholic and Protestant Christian faiths, Chinese and Korean Christians, Portuguese, Polish and Ukrainian Catholic, temples for Hindus, mosques for Muslims of the several branches of the Islamic faith, and a gurdwara for Sikhs.
