The Rouge Park is Canada's
largest urban park and one of the largest
in the world. And with the 2002 addition of
7000 acres of federal land on the Oak Ridges
Moraine designated as green space and connected
to the park - an initiative spearheaded by
Mr. Lee - the park is now larger than ever.
The Rouge Valley includes forests, meadows,
ponds, wetlands and beaches, and its ecosystems
are home to over a quarter of Ontario's species
of plant life, as well as more than 100 different
species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and
fish. A birdwatcher's paradise, the park boasts
225 bird species, including 123 breeding species.
In ensuring the long-term welfare of this
important ecosystem, restoration projects
are being undertaken by volunteers and organized
groups to improve the quality of the Park's
habitats for future generations.
